Simonsig 2015 “Sunbird” Sauvignon Blanc ($ 17,99)

##Background to Current Wave of Allegations

The current wave of allegations began with the controversy regarding volleyball athletes and twin sisters Lee Jae-young and Lee Da-yeong. After the Lee sisters admitted to the charges, accusations of school bullying by sport stars and celebrities followed swiftly. This wave of allegations has been termed "school #MeToo" movement online.

School #MeToo: "학투" (hak tu) from 학폭 미투 (hakpok mitu)

School violence: 학폭 (hakpok) = 학교 (school) 폭력 (violence) (hakkyo pokryeok)

Jo Byeong Gyu (Cho Byeong-kyu)

Initial accuser uploaded a post on an online forum on February 16, 2021 claiming to be a victim of bullying from Jo Byeong Gyu while they were at school in New Zealand together.

According to HB Entertainment (his agency):

> Immediately after we filed a criminal complaint seeking punishment for illegal acts regarding our actor and requested an investigation this morning (February 17), the writer of the false post contacted our company. The writer of the false post turned themselves in and admitted that the post they had written was false.

Following the initial accusation, two more additional accusers also posted while one former classmate posted in defense of Jo Byeong Gyu. See the articles below for details.

So here’s the deal: if you grew up in the 90’s, and considered yourself a rebel, you were legally required to own one of this band’s albums.

They are groundbreaking. They are iconic. They fuse electronica with rock in a way that has been often imitated, but never duplicated. They are profound. They are dirty. They channel your passion and your pain and make them into music.

This week we are looking at the one and only Nine Inch Nails.

Take the Clash and Public Enemy and Ministry and U2 and Prince and King Crimson and Devo and Skinny Puppy and put them all in one gigantic blender.

Congrats, you sick murdering fuck, you are going to jail for all time.

Also, you managed to blend together completely disparate and different musical influences to create something brand new. You’ve made rock with an industrial edge techno with real melody and lyricism keyboards and samples that are actually cool rather than lame. And if you didn’t get so focused on your kill streak there, you might have become as cool as our boy Trent.

One of the first things you have to know about NIN is that there really is only one Nail: Trent Reznor himself. Like our very own Josh Homme, he is the only continuous member of the band. When NIN were selected for the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame in 2020, Reznor was going to be the only one inducted. until he insisted that the Hall take some specific bandmates too. BTW, that induction has not happened yet due to some kind of plague or something. IDK, I don’t watch much TV.

Reznor has had many other bandmates who have been in and out of NIN, and has had long standing collaborations with many of them - especially Atticus Ross and Alan Moulder. But for the purposes of this write up, we are just going to focus on Reznor himself.

Trent Reznor was born in New Castle, Pennsylvania in 1965. His parents divorced when he was six. He went to live with his m

Sorry for the delay, guys, I had kind of a rough month. We're moving away from Spain, but not that much, just crossing a border to Portugal. I don't know enough about the Portuguese history in Eurovision, so there won't be a post series about them, just this one.

The usual glossary for people who are not up to speed on what Eurovision is:

  • Eurovision: The Gay Olympics An international music contest in which most countries in Europe and some not in Europe take part.
  • EBU: European Broadcasting Union, an international body made by many national broadcasters that organizes Eurovision and sets its rules.
  • RTP - Rádio e Televisão de Portugal, the national broadcasters that represents Portugal at Eurovision.
  • Juries: Panels of alleged music experts who vote, both in Eurovision and in national finals.
  • Televote: Vote by the public, usually done by phone/SMS and in some cases by internet, both in Eurovision and in national finals.
  • National final: A televised show in which a national broadcaster selects their representative, usually with vote by the public.
  • Internal selection: When a national broadcaster doesn't hold a national final, an instead appoints an artist to represent them.

Act Zero: A Brief History of Portugal

For most of its history, Portugal was one of the biggest underachievers in Eurovision. From their debut in 1964 up to an including 2016, they had placed last three times and two of them were getting absolutely no points. They reached the top 10 in nine out of 48 participations and they have reached the top 5 exactly never. Their best placing was sixth in 1996 (By the way, that was Lucía Moniz and you've probably seen her before.)

The only worse performing country overall would probably be Finland (Also having six as their best placement but with eight times finishing last including three of them with no points) until they won in 2006. Meanwhile, Portugal didn't even make the final four consecutive times from 2004 to 2007, and then again from 2011 to 2015.

There is a very simple reason to explain this underperformance, particularly in the last couple decades: Portugal doesn't really care that much about how they place in Eurovision.

Unlike countries like Sweden, Russia or Azerbaijan, who take pride in good placements and shame in bad results, whenever Portugal does badly they shrug and move on

Unlike countries like Sweden, Russia or Azerbaijan, who take pride in good placements and shame in bad results, whenever Portugal does badly they shrug and move on

. hopefully as playable by some miraculous, surprise reveal please don't hurt me, Smilegate.
